Ridiculous Café Jewellery

Jewelllery that brings people together.

This project aims to teset whether jewellery can function as a tool for creating unexpected social connections in everyday public spaces. By placing wearable pieces in a café setting rather than behind glass in a gallery, the research examines what happens when people have direct, casual access to art objects during routine activities like drinking coffee. The observational data, watching if strangers talk to each other, laugh together, or feel awkward, will reveal how jewellery can disrupt normal social barriers and create moments of shared experience through humour, beauty, and surprise. This work provides practical evidence of jewellery's capacity to transform ordinary environments into sites of social encounter, showing whether objects designed for "the spiritual aspect of a human being" can shift how people relate to each other in public. The project develops new understanding of how jewellery functions outside traditional contexts of ownership and display, contributing knowledge about participatory practices where the audience completes the work through their interactions with the objects and each other.
