Emergence
2023
This work involved experimentation around the concept of emergence in science, where the whole possesses properties and information that are not present in its individual parts. I used rapid prototyping to test my ideas while still undertaking my PhD and completed the piece during my maternity leave. I was honoured and grateful to be invited by artists Aphra Cheesman, Jen, Nao Hirata, and Gaia Maria Walicka to participate in their group exhibition at Rubicon ARI. The making of this piece was quiet and reflective, something I could work on during my newborn’s naps. Assembling the modules followed a sense of intuition and rhizomatic growth. The greatest challenge was installing the piece in the gallery space. At the time, my son was only three months old and still breastfeeding, so the entire family came to help with the installation. My three-year-old rode his scooter around the block while my partner walked the baby in the pram. It was a real team effort, and a moment that beautifully reflects the entanglement of my art practice with motherhood.
